Bible verse on an orange background reads: "Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord..." from Psalm 95:1-2 (NIV). Hands icon at the bottom.

In the first post of this series, we learned that devotionals are a great resource to intentionally and consciously seek God every day. If you haven’t read it or want to refresh the value of devotionals in your relationship with God, click here.

Today, I’m sharing the second strategy for drawing closer to God each day: gratitude. Keep reading to learn more about it!

Strategy #2 - Developing a Grateful Heart ♥️

The word gratitude means to appreciate a good deed or favor another person has done or wanted to do for us. God is the source of all good things we receive. Our response to his goodness is to express our gratitude to Him daily. But, how can we develop a grateful heart in order to get closer to God? Here I share three ideas that will lead you to achieve this.

  1. Praying before eating your meals.

Something as simple as praying before eating any of your meals brings you closer to God. By doing so, you are acknowledging God's providence. He created all sources of food (Genesis 1:11-13; 29-30). So, the next time you are about to eat something, pause for a few seconds and thank God for His provision.

  1. Praising God for a thing, platform, or person that makes your life easier every day.

Life is easier when we receive support. We need other people and resources in order to learn, grow, and do daily tasks. Thanking God for a person or resource that makes your life easier is a way of noticing his helping hand in your life. For what thing or platform are you grateful to God for? Who can you think of that has helped you to become a better person? Once you have meditated on this, pause and praise God for the many ways He blesses your life.

  2. Reading the Book of Psalms.

The Book of Psalms reminds us of God's goodness in our lives. Its content teaches us to be thankful for God's provision in both the good times and the not-so-good times. To cultivate a grateful heart, I suggest you do a 7-day reading of the Book of Psalms. What do you need to do?

Step 1: Choose the week you’ll begin the reading and mark it on your calendar.

Step 2: Read the suggested psalm for each day from the list provided below.

Step 3: After reading each chapter, pause to reflect on how the psalm reveals God's providence in your life.

A 7-Day Journey of Gratitude Through Psalms

🤲 Sunday - Psalm 8

🤲 Monday - Psalm 30

🤲 Tuesday - Psalm 65

🤲 Wednesday - Psalm 92

🤲 Thursday - Psalm 96

🤲 Friday - Psalm 100

🤲 Saturday - Psalm 136

Final Words

Gratitude moves us to seek God daily. When we're grateful, we recognize the favor and providence of our Creator in our lives. We recognize that there is no one in this world who does or will do the wonderful things that He does and will do for us, no matter the circumstances.
