Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. 1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV)

It’s incredible how accessible God is to us! The Christian faith aims to develop a personal relationship with our Creator. Isn't that wonderful?! It's a two-way relationship. That is, God seeks to relate to us and we to Him. In that relationship, God will always be available to you and me. Therefore, we also need to do our part and make ourselves available to Him to develop this relationship by being intentional with our time and resources.

In order to help you strengthen your relationship with God, I have created the series “Choose God: 4 Strategies to Draw Closer to Him Every Day” which will equip you with resources that will encourage you to seek Him daily. In this post, you’ll learn about the first resource. Keep reading to find out!

Things Every Christian Needs to Do on a Daily Basis

Before diving into the first resource, it’s important to review three things that will undoubtedly strengthen our relationship with God.

  1. Worship

To worship is to show God devotion, trust, honor, and respect. We show this, first and foremost, by recognizing that God is sovereign and worthy of all praise. Things like praising, praying, serving, encouraging others, caring for the sick, offering shelter, and sharing the gospel are examples of worshipping God.

  1. Daily Bible Time

The Bible is the most important book for Christians. A daily interaction with God’s Word strengthens our faith and knowledge of Him. The Bible provides us with the details on how to relate to God and treat other people. It registers God’s mighty works throughout generations and His commitment to keep looking after all His creation.

  1. Prayer

Praying is expressing to God what we feel and think. It’s an act of trust. Prayer assures us that when we share our desires, longings, concerns, and doubts, God will be faithful in responding and helping us.

Strategy #1 - Devotionals: A Brief and Effective Resource for Drawing Closer to God 📚 🎧

Devotionals are inspirational readings or recordings that show God’s faithfulness in life. Below you’ll find seven reasons for considering this resource as a strategy to get closer to God on a daily basis.

  1. Short and comprehensive - Devotionals contain between 250 to 500 words. Even though it's a brief format, in less than ten minutes, you’ll receive words of encouragement, pray, read from the Bible, and learn how to apply new spiritual teachings in your life.

  2. Variety of topics - Devotionals develop a variety of topics related to living a life as a believer of the Triune God. For instance, you can find resources dedicated to building a stronger relationship with Jesus, emotional healing, God’s wisdom, prayer, trust in God, forgiveness, and much more.

  3. Targeted to specific audiences - The scope of devotionals is infinite! There is material written or recorded for all kinds of audiences, such as women, men, teenagers, children, leaders, business men and women, pastors, married couples, singles, among other groups.

  4. Variety in format - Devotional material can be found in digital or physical format. A great way to find digital resources is to type in any search engine “Devotional for…” and a list of books, YouTube channels, websites, and podcasts will pop-up. If you prefer the traditional format, meaning books, don’t hesitate to visit your favorite Christian bookstore to find something that meets your interests.

  5. Relatable - The stories you’ll read are written by Christians that, like you and me, struggle in life. The main focus of their stories is to encourage you to keep getting closer to God to overcome anything.

  6. Bible foundation - Every devotional is based on Scripture. The benefit of this is that you’ll learn biblical truths that will sustain you in life.

  7. Application - Devotionals conclude with a practical step to apply what has been learned.

Devotionals are a way to meet God every day. I invite you to try out this resource. Look for the best option for you on the internet, app store, or your favorite Christian bookstore. Also, you can ask a fellow Christian, pastor, or leader to make recommendations. Devotionals are a blessing!

Final Words

The first step in connecting with God is to consciously and intentionally choose Him above all else every day. Worship, time spent reading or studying the Bible, and prayer are activities that will undoubtedly bring us closer to God. Devotionals serve as a strategy for practicing these activities. They promote our spiritual growth and strengthen our relationship with the living God.
