Prayer: A Way to Experience God

The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.

Psalm 145:18 (NASB 2020)

Experiencing God is an act of the mind and the spirit. It is an act of the mind because our desire and intention to connect with Him starts in our brain. It is an act of the spirit because God is Spirit (John 4:24). The way in which we interact with God involves developing spiritual practices, actions, or habits that help us get closer to Him. Among the spiritual practices of the Christian faith, prayer holds a significant place. But what is prayer?

"Think often on God, by day, by night, in your business and even in your diversions. He is always near you and with you; leave him not alone." - Brother Lawrence

1) Prayer Is Talking to God

Prayer is communication. It is a communication with God. It is a constant communication with God. Through prayer we express to God our thoughts, emotions, burdens, gratitude, repentance, devotion, doubts, joy, and much more. One of the amazing things about talking to God is that we can be honest with Him. There is no need to adjust or filter our words. We are free to be ourselves with Him.

Talking to God allows us to develop a relationship with Him based on trust. And as our trust in Him grows, we will find peace, guidance, and relief.

2) Prayer Is Listening to God

When we pray, we not only share what matters to us with God, but also listen to His guidance. Prayer prepares us to receive God’s answer, whether it is a 'Yes', 'No', or 'Not yet.' You might be wondering, how could I listen to God? Easy! One way to do so is by reading and meditating on the Bible.

The Bible registers God's actions and wisdom to help us overcome life's challenges. Do you have a Bible at home? If you do not, get one or download it to your smartphone! Once you have your Bible, look on the internet for strategies on how to read and meditate on its contents. You can also ask your pastor or fellow Christians how they have listened to God through reading and meditating on the Word. Or simply discover and create your own way! You will be amazed at how clear God will speak to you through His Word.

Final Words

Prayer is fundamental for the Christian life. It is a way to practice your faith and get closer to God. Do not wait any longer—begin communicating with your Creator!

Take a Leap of Faith

If you have not prayed for a while or if this is your first time praying, take a moment to say this prayer:

Dear God and Creator of mine,

I praise You because You are worthy of all praise. Your Word in Psalm 145:18 declares that You are close to those who seek You. Thank you for inspiring in me the desire to talk with You. Thank you because I can tell You anything I have in my mind and heart. Help me to resume (or start) and keep a constant conversation with You. Guide me through Your Word as a way to listen to You. I love you, God. I pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.
